Little Grover was found as a stray. He was quite the mess as he was underweight, fleas were crawling over his body, his hair was a matted mess and he had a pretty advanced eye infection. He was so matted on his rear legs that he could hardly walk. The shelter staff trimmed clumps of hair from his legs to make him more mobile. His handlers said he was just a sweet dog, giving them licks and wagging his tail. Even though he needed a bath and a better haircut, they said he was “very adorable”. Since it was unlikely Grover would get adopted from the shelter in this condition, rescues were contacted for help with him.

After a visit to the ophthalmologist, we learned that surgery to remove his cataracts would not give him sight. He was diagnosed with PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) an inherited disease where a light damages the rods and cones due to a defective enzyme in the retina of the eye. Dog quite often eventually become completely blind.

PRA itself is not painful but because of the cataracts, Grove is susceptible to uveitis of his eyes.   However that is easily controlled with daily antibiotic eye drops.

Grover has gained 3 pounds and is doing AWESOME. He will even go up a few steps and learns a new area quickly. (He does need to be carried down steps.  Down is just too scary!)

Sometimes it is hard to believe he is really blind.   He gets along great with other dogs but he doesn’t live with cats or small children so we are not sure what he would think of them.

If you are looking for a great little dog who is happy, friendly and sweet, then Grover is the one for you!
